Stop the eviction of LSOA Buridda (host of RFN Genova 2022)

La Radical Film Network è una rete che da più di dieci anni sostiene le pratiche di attivist3 e persone coinvolt3 nel mondo accademico, nella produzione, distribuzione e diffusione della cultura filmica radicale in tutto il mondo. La (un)conference/festival tenutasi a Genova nel giugno del 2022 è stata una delle iniziative più partecipate e uniche nella storia della RFN, proprio perché a Genova, a differenza di molte altre città, esistono ancora realtà occupate e autogestite come il LSOA Buridda e l’Aut Aut 357, nelle quali vive e si riproduce un modello di cultura alternativa slegata dal profitto e si organizzano dibattiti su questioni politiche legate a tutto quello che dovrebbe essere messo in discussione fra le mura di un’università fondata sul pensiero critico. 

Per questo è particolarmente preoccupante apprendere dell’imminente sgombero del LSOA Buridda, uno degli spazi che ha avuto un ruolo fondamentale nella costruzione di RFN Genova 2022, per trasformare lo spazio in uno studentato da 66 posti letto. Lo sgombero assume i connotati di un messaggio politico mirato a contrastare l’uso di spazi che svolgono una funzione vitale nel panorama culturale e politico della città. E questo succede in un momento in cui gli spazi di socialità e produzione culturale gratuiti e accessibili da tutt3 a prescindere dalla propria situazione economica sono minacciati dalle logiche di intervento della governance locale. 

Non accettiamo la sistematica messa a valore degli spazi pubblici della nostra città in favore di logiche di mercato che riproducono e amplificano le diseguaglianze sociali. Sappiamo che ci sono già residenze per studenti che necessitano di lavori di ristrutturazione. Sappiamo anche che il calo demografico e la conseguente diminuzione delle iscrizioni renderà questa residenza per studenti inutile nel giro di qualche anno. In quanto membr3 della RFN, chiediamo al Rettore, Prof. Federico Delfino, di riconoscere l’immenso contributo culturale del LSOA Buridda e di fermare lo sgombero, perché privare Genova di un pezzo della sua storia, di uno spazio che da anni ne arricchisce la vita culturale, sarà un danno irreparabile per la città.

STOP THE EVICTION OF LSOA BURIDDA (GENOVA)

The Radical Film Network is a network that, for more than ten years, has been supporting the practices of activists and people involved in academia, in the production, distribution, and dissemination of radical film culture all around the world. The (un)conference/festival which was held in Genoa in June 2022 was one of the most well-attended and unique initiatives in the history of the RFN, precisely because in Genoa, unlike in many other cities, there are still occupied and self-managed spaces such as LSOA Buridda and Aut Aut 357. These places are home to and cultivate a model of alternative culture which is not tied to profit, organizing debates on political issues related to everything that ought to be questioned between the walls of a university founded on critical thinking. 

For this reason, it is particularly worrying to learn of the imminent eviction of LSOA Buridda, one of the spaces that played a fundamental role in the construction of RFN Genoa 2022, to have the building they are currently occupying turned into a 66-bed student accommodation. Their eviction takes on the connotations of a political message aimed at countering the use of spaces that play a vital role in the cultural and political landscape of the city. This happens at a time when spaces of sociality and cultural production that are free and accessible to all, regardless of their financial situation, are under constant threat due to the intervention of local government. 

We will not accept the systematic exploitation of public spaces in our cities to make profit and follow market imperatives that reproduce and amplify social inequalities. We know that there are already student housing facilities in need of renovation, and we also know that the demographic decline and the consequent decrease in enrolments will make this student accommodation unnecessary within a few years. As members of the RFN, we ask the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Federico Delfino, to recognize the immense cultural contribution of LSOA Buridda and stop their eviction, because depriving Genoa of a piece of its history, of a space that has enriched its cultural life for years, will cause irreparable damage to the city.
